Bringing Butterflies Home

St. Francis Sunday, October 6, noon
St Dunstan's Episcopal Church - 5450 Massachusetts Ave, Bethesda, MD - Entrance on Fort Sumner Drive

Butterflies, for nearly everyone, are an exquisite and universal symbol of hope and rebirth. Through imagery and words, Lynn Teo Simarski will share her quest to transform her yard—from one that is sterile to butterflies and other native life—into a haven. Our widespread adoption of monoculture lawns has left little habitat to support cherished butterflies and other creatures like bees and birds. Most of our imported “pest-free” ornamental plants cannot nourish native pollinators. Lynn’s yard is in early metamorphosis, but nature’s “flowers of the air” have begun breeding there anew. Her photos are a visual inspiration to “bring butterflies home” to every yard, including church yards.

Lynn Teo Simarski is a science writer and fine-art photographer. She gave a presentation previously at St. Dunstan’s with her husband Guy Guthridge, about Antarctica. Her photography website is www.lynnteosimarski.com.
