X-WR-CALDESC:NOW WHAT?/WHAT NOW?\n\nWhat: An informal support group for sen
iors as they reflect on their new identities as persons whose\nlives are n
ecessarily changing as “The Calendar” brings new challenges\, new perspect
 ives\, new\nlimitations and\, most important\, new opportunities.\n\nWhy:
Life brings changes to all of us. Roles\, activities and responsibilities
 that gave us satisfaction\nand identify–or difficulty–fade away\, opening
opportunities for new engagements that satisfy our\nneeds for community\,
spirituality and exploration. Sometimes those changes also bring limitatio
 ns–\nphysical\, mental and logistical–that require personal re-orientation
and creative thinking. Although\neach of us experiences these things alon
e\, exploring them with others often develops perspectives\nthat we might
not easily achieve otherwise.\n\nWho: We hope to attract individuals serve
d by Little Falls Village and nearby areas. We are\nespecially interested
in those who are fully retired\, especially those whose responsibilities a
nd roles\nhave changed\, leaving them with new questions about how they ar
e finding meaning in their lives.\n\n• We propose to begin a group with 8
to 12 members\; the conversational format becomes\ndifficult/impossible wi
th more. (But: we realize that not everyone will attend every time and tha
t\nmembership will be volatile.)\n• We hope to seed the group with a core
membership of 3 or 4 individuals who will commit to a 1\nyear of participa
tion to stabilize the group initially.\n• Also\, while we intend to meet i
n person\, we might also try a Zoom version if enough people\nneed or want
that format but only after the in-person approach is “road tested”.\n\nHo
w: The “What Now?” group will meet twice monthly in a comfortable setting
and simply engage in\nconversation. Conversation will start with a topic\,
suggested by a Convenor\, which the group will\n“Structure” as it unfolds
. And\, the group will surface its own topics\, as well. This is not a cla
ss with a\ncurriculum but an opportunity for collective reflecting and sha
ring of views and experiences from which\nall will learn.\n\nFor illustrat
ion\, some sample topics:\n• What do I want my legacy to be?\n• I feel lik
 e I’m wasting precious time: Should I feel guilty?\n• I thought “A” about
 retirement but I’m getting “B”\, “C” and “D”\n• I was always a straight A
student: How do I get an “A” in being old?\n\n• I have always wanted to (f
ill in the blank)....what goes in the BLANK?\n• I used to think (blank) bu
t now things look different. Fight\, flight or adapt?\n• Loss is an ugly w
ord but I’m feeling it everywhere. How can I keep going?\n\nWe think that
mid-day or afternoon meetings will be most convenient for the intended aud
ience.\nResources: Little Falls Village will co-sponsor the group\; it wil
l provide visibility in the (monthly) LFV\nnewsletter and help to identify
resource persons to interact supportively with the group on occasion.\nSa
int Dunstan’s Episcopal Church will provide a comfortable meeting space an
d hospitality\, as well\nas convenors for the group.
